What will I learn from the online training?

The online training is designed to teach you Community Reinforcement and Family Training (CRAFT) to professionals working with clients, specifically clients who are concerned about a loved one’s substance use and/or recovery.

Why learn CRAFT?

CRAFT is a leading evidence-based protocol to work with clients who are concerned about a loved one’s substance use and/or recovery. Research shows us that 46% of Americans are currently loving someone struggling with substance use, so that’s a lot of potential CRAFT clients!

How can I get certified in CRAFT?

CRAFT Certification is attained by achieving a passing grade on each of the 9 core CRAFT procedures. To pursue CRAFT Certification, a trainee completes audio-recordings of the core 9 CRAFT procedures in client sessions, and receives a grade by a CRAFT certified coder as designated by the official CRAFT Coding Manual. One of the training conditions in this study will have the opportunity to pursue CRAFT Certification, and record CRAFT sessions with clients as a part of their study condition.

What does the mock session entail?

Study participants will be asked to complete mock counseling sessions at three points during the research study. For each, you will be given information about the “client” (portrayed by an actor) and conduct a 45-60 minute session via Zoom that will be provided to the research team. These sessions are designed to allow participants the chance to practice skills learned.

Will I get feedback on the mock sessions?

All study conditions will receive written feedback from certified CRAFT coders on the final mock session recording, once all other study requirements are satisfied.

Will participating in this study count towards continuing education?

This training curriculum is a NAADAC and NASW approved.
All participants in all study conditions are eligible for CE's.

Will I have to submit recordings of client sessions?

There are 3 different conditions in this study - you will be required to submit client session recordings if you are randomly assigned to the training condition which requires audio-recording of CRAFT client sessions. We will provide you with a HIPPA compliant Zoom meeting link to utilize for session recording and our expert trainers will provide a grading and written feedback to participants on each client session submitted.

Can I sign up and only agree to participate in a condition that does not have audio-recording?

Random assignment is truly random, like a roll of the dice. By signing up and agreeing to participate in this training study, it is important that you understand and consent to being randomly assigned to any of our three training groups, one of which requires audio-recording client sessions utilizing the CRAFT procedures.

What kind of client would be a good fit for CRAFT sessions?

CRAFT clients can be anyone concerned about the substance use of a person close to them. Typically, they are family members of someone with a SUD, such as parents, spouses, or siblings, but can also include close friends.

What if I can’t find any clients who are a good fit for CRAFT sessions?

The research study team has best practices to share with participants who need help recruiting a CRAFT client or CRAFT clients. Given that research shows us 46% of Americans are loving someone struggling with substance use, many clients may have a need for CRAFT. We ask that participants in the training study be prepared to make best efforts to recruit one or more CRAFT clients to work with during the study. We can also make efforts on your behalf to assist in recruiting a client, should you need extra support to do so.

I am not sure if I can sign up for this study, or whether my boss needs to know about my participation in the study and its requirements?

Once you complete this eligibility screening survey and prior to consenting to join the study, you will have the opportunity to read more about the study and speak with a research team member. You may also request a version of the consent form to share with your boss. Some participants choose to work with CRAFT clients through their employment site, but others may choose to work with CRAFT clients outside of their work setting. Everyone’s situation is different so we encourage you to read the consent form which details study participation details and review with your boss if that is most appropriate for you.

1. Practical Application
Trainees practice CRAFT by conducting the 9 core Protocols in client sessions, and demonstrating fidelity to the Session Guide checklists, to satisfy certification grading requirements.

‍ 2. Seamless Session Recording and Submission
Trainees are provided with their own HIPPA compliant online meeting recording service to record client sessions, which are automatically sent to expert trainers for review, grading and feedback.

3. Expert Feedback and Certification
Audio recordings of sessions are graded by expert trainers and feedback is provided to help trainees work towards achieving a passing grade on each protocol. Once trainees receive a passing grade on each of the 9 CRAFT protocols, they join an elite group of professionals who have achieved CRAFT Certification.
